About the product.

The HMT Kohinoor is one of the most celebrated dress watches from Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) — India's first homegrown watchmaker, founded in Bangalore in 1961 in partnership with Citizen Watch Co. of Japan. Introduced in the early 1970s and named after the legendary diamond, the Kohinoor was HMT's answer to elegance — a step up from the utilitarian Janata and Pilot models. This piece comes in a silver sunburst dial.

Why the Kohinoor matters:

Long before Titan or Seiko had a real presence in India, HMT was the gold standard of Indian wristwatches, and the Kohinoor was its refined face — a watch given at weddings, retirements, and promotions as a mark of having "made it." HMT's factories shut down in 2016, and since then the Kohinoor has become one of the most sought-after Indian vintage watches among collectors, prized for its hand-wound movement, robust build, and cultural significance.

Specifications:

  • Movement: HMT caliber 0231, 17-jewel hand-wound mechanical, derived from Citizen's caliber 0201, with HMT's Parashock shock-resistance system

  • Winding: Manual hand-wind

A genuine piece of Indian watchmaking history, not a reissue.
